Getting an EV Charger in Your Calgary Condo

Charging at home is the easiest way to own an EV, and it's very doable in a Calgary condo. It just takes a bit more planning than a house, because your parking stall, the electrical room and the conduit runs are usually common property.

Do you need board approval?

Almost always, yes. Under Alberta's Condominium Property Act and your building's bylaws, work that touches common property generally needs your condo board's approval. Unlike Ontario and BC, Alberta has no specific "right to charge" law, so the quality of your proposal matters.

What a strong proposal includes

• The charger model and circuit size
• Where power comes from (your suite panel or a building panel) and the conduit route
• A load calculation showing the building can handle it, or an EVEMS/load-sharing plan
• How electricity will be metered and billed back to you
• Proof of a certified electrician, insurance and the permit
• Who owns and maintains the charger if you sell

Building-wide charging and ChargeYYC

It supports condos, apartments, townhouses and rowhouses, and its first phase funds an EV Charging Road Map. The board applies. What does it cost?
