Do You Need a Permit to Install an EV Charger in Calgary?

Yes. Installing a Level 2 (240V) EV charger in Calgary means adding a new electrical circuit, and that requires an electrical permit under the Alberta Safety Codes Act, followed by an inspection.

Who issues the permit?

Inside city limits, the City of Calgary issues electrical permits and carries out inspections. In surrounding towns such as Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Okotoks, the permit comes from the municipality or the accredited safety codes agency it uses. The rules are the same everywhere in Alberta; only the office changes.

What the process looks like

1. Load calculation. We confirm your panel can handle the new circuit, or plan load management.
2. Permit filed. We apply before work starts.
3. Installation. Usually 3–5 hours for a typical garage install.
4. Inspection. A safety codes officer checks the work, and you get a closed permit on file.

Why skipping the permit is a bad idea

• Insurance. If unpermitted electrical work is involved in a fire, your insurer may deny the claim.
• Selling your home. Buyers and inspectors increasingly ask for permit records on recent electrical work.
• Safety. An EV charger pulls heavy current for hours. Wrong wire gauge or breaker size is a real fire risk.

Can I pull the permit myself?

Alberta does allow homeowner permits for some work on your own home, but the work then has to pass inspection on its own merits. For a high-current circuit, most people are better served by a certified electrician who handles the permit, work and inspection together.
