Calgary winters are hard on EVs. Deep cold cuts range, slows charging, and makes a nearly empty battery a real problem on a -30°C morning. A Level 2 charger at home solves most of this.

Why Level 2 matters more in Calgary

A standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds only a few kilometres of range per hour, and in real cold some of that power goes to keeping the battery warm. A Level 2 charger on a 40–60A circuit refills a typical daily commute overnight even in January, with power to spare for preconditioning.

Precondition while plugged in

Schedule your car to warm the battery and cabin before you leave, while it's still plugged in. The energy comes from the grid, not your battery, so you start the day with full range and a warm car. Just skip the block heater.

What to look for in a cold-climate install

• A cold-rated charger with a cable that stays flexible at -30°C and an outdoor-rated enclosure (NEMA 4 / IP65 or better) for driveway installs
• Hardwired over plug-in for outdoor or high-use setups. There's less to wear out and no outdoor receptacle to ice up.
• Smart placement. Keep it out of the path of snow shovelling and roof drip lines, and mount it high enough to clear snowbanks.
• A holster or cable hook so the connector isn't lying in slush

Chinooks and temperature swings

Rapid freeze-thaw cycles can let moisture into poorly sealed connections. A properly permitted install with the correct weatherproof fittings avoids that. It's one more reason the inspection is worth it. See why the permit matters.
