Is There an EV Charger Rebate in Alberta?

Short answer: no. As of 2026, Alberta has no provincial rebate for a home Level 2 EV charger, and neither ENMAX nor FortisAlberta runs a charger rebate for single-family homes. Some installers also bundle the federal vehicle incentive into a "save up to $5,000" headline that sounds like it covers the charger. It doesn't.

A simple test: a real program has an official page on a government or utility website, with eligibility rules and an application form. If you can't find one, assume it isn't available in Alberta.

What the federal $5,000 EV rebate actually covers

The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) takes up to $5,000 off an eligible new battery-electric vehicle, or up to $2,500 off a plug-in hybrid. The dealer applies it at the point of sale, so there's no separate paperwork for you.

• It applies to the vehicle purchase or lease only.
• It does not pay for a home charger or the installation.
• It does not require you to have a charger permit.
• Eligibility depends on the vehicle, its price and where it was built, so check Transport Canada's eligible vehicle list before you shop.

So EVAP can make the car cheaper, which frees up budget for the charger, but the two are separate.

Condo or townhouse? ChargeYYC is the program to know

The City of Calgary's ChargeYYC pilot is aimed at condos, apartments, townhouses and rowhouses: the buildings where adding chargers is hardest. The first phase funds an EV Charging Road Map, a professional plan showing how a building can add charging for owners over time without overloading its electrical system.

A few things to know:

• The condo board or property owner applies, not individual unit owners.
• Funding is limited to a set number of approved applicants per phase.
• A roadmap makes later installs faster and cheaper, because the load planning and approvals are already done.

The Alberta advantage: no PST

Alberta is the only province with no provincial sales tax, and it adds up on an EV charger. On a $2,500 installation, you pay 5% GST ($125). In Ontario, the 13% HST on the same job would be $325; in BC, GST plus PST adds 12%. The tax difference alone is in the same range as the small charger rebates other provinces offer.

6 ways to cut your install cost (that actually work)

1. Put the charger close to your electrical panel

Heavy-gauge copper wire is the biggest variable cost in most installs. A garage wall on the other side of your panel can save hundreds compared with a run across the basement and up through the garage.

2. Use load management instead of a panel upgrade

Many older Calgary homes have 100-amp service. Before you pay for a 200-amp upgrade, ask about an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS). It watches your home's total load and throttles the charger when needed, so it can often avoid a much larger service upgrade.

3. Right-size the circuit

A 40-amp circuit (32 amps of charging) adds roughly 40–50 km of range per hour. That's enough to refill a normal Calgary commute overnight, even in winter. Going bigger than you need means thicker wire and more cost.

4. Choose the charger with installation in mind

A reliable, cold-rated charger from a major brand doesn't need to be the most expensive model. Hardwired units often save the cost of a heavy-duty outdoor receptacle.

5. Bundle work

If you're already planning electrical work, like finishing a basement or adding a garage subpanel, doing the EV circuit at the same time saves a second callout.

6. Insist on an all-in quote

Make sure the price includes the permit, inspection, materials and labour. A low headline price that adds permit fees and "extra wire" later isn't a saving.
